  • DNA AND RNA: A very educational site about DNA and RNA which are two different acids found in the cells of living organism.
  • NOVA | scienceNOW | RNAi | PBS: This relates to the Biochemistry module, and the material on DNA and RNA particularly. RNA interference is an ingenious method cells use to defend themselves against foreign genetic material, most particularly viral genetic material. Much viral genetic information is in the form of double-strande d RNA. In the animal cell, dsRNA isn't common, so cells have evolved a mechanism to destroy viral RNA by using its double-strande d nature. This process is RNAi, and scientists are now trying to harness it for use in genetic disorders - macular degeneration, for one. It's absolutely BRILLIANT! This is another extension of the central dogma, by the way.

  • SparkNotes: DNA Translation: Introduction TO DNA Translation: a breif introduction to DNA translation with the following pages going into more detail
  • New Way Epigenetic Information is Inherited: Small RNAs Inherited From Mother Determines Offspring's Fertility Trait: maternal small RNAs called Piwi-interacti ng RNAs (piRNAs) that are deposited into fruit fly embryos "silence& quot; DNA sequences that induce sterility, thus ensuring the fertility of the progeny.
  • the physics arXiv blog " How ribosomal traffic cops keep bacteria alive: A termination factor called Rho seems to unblock these jams by removing prematurely paused RNA polymerase and replacing it with new polymerase, thereby restarting traffic. A bit like emergency services removing broken down vehicles from a highway.
  • DNA makes RNA: This is a brilliant animation to show the process of trancription. For visual learners, this is a very useful resource to understand the overview of what the process of trancription looks like, as studied in BS1001.
