Dairy Production > Phenotype
The following information is about Phenotype.
Phenotype? A Basic Definition
The value taken by a trait. Phenotypes of qualitative traits usually fall into discrete groups (e.g., the color of the coat can be black, red, white, etc.), but the value taken by a quantitative trait can be a number (e.g. lactation performance = 5345 kg).

- 2007-06-26 Evolution: What is the significance of the genotype-pheno type map for evolutionary theory? 'The structure of this map influences what is possible in evolutionary terms over a given timespan,' ; explains Beaumont. He illustrates this with an example: 'The evolutionary explanation for the existence of white polar bears is based on variation in fur colour among brown bears. Natural selection selects lighter variants because these have an advantage (camouflage) during hunting. But how likely is this evolutionary development? The chance of white bears coming into existence as a result of spontaneous genetic changes depends on the distance between the brown genotype and the white genotype in the genotype space; the smaller the distance, the greater the likelihood of a white bear evolving. The structure of the genotype-pheno type map therefore dictates what is plausible during evolution over a finite time.'

- Development puts an end to the evolution of endless forms: the sparseness of variety in nature can be attributed to the interactions between multiple genes and genetic controls involved in the development of organisms

- "The DNA Age - Taking a Peek at the Experts' Genetic Secrets" (NYT): The NYT article on George Church's "PGP 10" -- his public genome-and-phe notype information database. Written by Amy Harmon, who (rightly) mentions the issue of privacy not just for oneself, but for one's relatives: parents, children, siblings, and even more-distantly -related relatives. Church requires every participant to have "the equivalent of a Master's in genetics," ; but why is this clear that this is enough?
