- New cell analysis platform developed by Sandia researchers now available for licensing, partnerships - December 1, 2008: Microscale Immune and Cell Analysis (MICA) lab-on-a-chip platform facilitates high-throughpu t manipulation and interrogation of individual cells, one that enables quantitative analysis of cellular behaviors/proc esses with unprecedented speed, resolution, sensitivity, and multiplexing. Sandia uses it to determine immune cell responses to microbial pathogens. MICA seamlessly integrates cell culture and handling, cell stimulation (e.g., introduction of a pathogenic challenge), fluorescence-a ctivated cell sorting (FACS), flow cytometry, high-resolutio n imaging, and antibody-based proteomic analysis. Attributes: microscale, fully automated, exquisitely precise control over each cell and its environment, safe totally closed-system. Moreover, because microscale experiments consume vanishingly small amounts of cells and reagents, MICA can be used to investigate cellular processes that have proven impossible or impractical to study at conventional scale.

- Agricultural practices for increasing resistance of forest crops to pathogens: In contrast to agricultural crops, pest and pathogen management in forestry has to deal with a large number of crops which are frequently located on sub-optimal or marginal land, long crop rotations, and a large number of unspecialized pests and diseases. Due to greater stability, breeding techniques promoting horizontal resistance based on selection of populations and vegetative propagation are, therefore, more appropriate.
